Spotlight on Collaboration: TELUS Health Care Centre
TELUS Health, a division of TELUS Corporation, is a global health and wellbeing provider encompassing physical, mental and financial health. Due to a consolidation of services, they required expansion and improvements to the TELUS Health Corporate / Occupational Health Care Centre, located in an 18-storey building in downtown Vancouver, BC.
The objective of this project was to provide clinic space and adjacent nurse, nutritionist and doctor examination rooms. Also part of the program were offices, lounge space, locker rooms/showers for patients, treadmill rooms for stress testing, vision/hearing assessment areas, a phlebotomy room, ultrasound rooms, a meeting/conference room, and administrative areas.
34F was engaged as the Prime Consultant for this project, managing the consultant team including Vivid Green Architecture (CRP), AME Consulting Group (Mechanical), AES Engineering (Electrical), Reotech (Contractor), and Viking Fire Protection Inc. (Fire Protection).
Along with the project management team at JLL, this stellar team of consultants worked extremely collaboratively to overcome the most significant challenge for the project, which was the very ambitious schedule: TELUS had a 4-month timeline from design start to occupancy - so all work had to be expedited, and all products chosen for the project had to be readily available. This meant some serious strategy and planning sessions took place, and this team was ready to take on the challenge!
Due to the expedited timeline, the traditional design and construction process was not possible on this project, therefore we consolidated phases wherever possible to hit key project milestones. The team also had to be nimble and communicative - quick decisions were made on the fly due to availability (or, non-availability) of certain items, as well as to site conditions. Once construction began it was truly “all-hands-on-deck”, and super frequent site visits ensured everything was moving smoothly and decisions could be made in the moment.
The design concept aimed to embody the essence of the brand — clean, modern, and inviting — through thoughtful elements and materials. Metro Wallcovering's "Reatec" architectural film product was employed throughout, seamlessly mimicking the warmth of wood while maintaining a sleek aesthetic.
Custom millwork by Wanes, including kitchen installations and wood slat screens, delineated spaces with a contemporary touch. Falkbuilt's architectural glass partition systems further enhanced spatial definition while fostering an open atmosphere.
Greenery, in alignment with the brand guidelines, was introduced courtesy of a green wall crafted by Greenstems, infusing nature into the modern setting. Tarkett's luxury vinyl plank was selected for durability and elegance, complemented by Milliken carpeting in office areas.
Retaining the existing front desk ensured continuity, while some lighting fixtures were also repurposed to maintain functionality and sustainability. The integration of some existing millwork, such as relocation of certain cabinetry, demonstrated the team’s commitment to resourcefulness.
This project was truly a case study in collaboration – a real team effort was exhibited from all of the consultants on the team in order to deliver the project on time. Everyone worked at the same pace and stayed informed on a daily basis, supporting each other to get through to the finish line. Despite the ambitious schedule the project was indeed completed on time – a testament to the professionalism and expertise of everyone on the team!
